IMPORTANT NOTE: The Wyoming Board of Medicine does not issue "locum tenens" or other short-term licenses. Any temporary license issued by the Board is with the expectation that the applicant will complete the full licensure process including, if necessary, a licensure interview with the Board. Failure to complete the licensing process after a temporary license has been issued may result in denial of the application for licensure, which is reportable to the NPDB.
Expedited Temporary License for Physician Assistants
The following information outlines the criteria an applicant must meet to be eligible for an expedited temporary license:
Upon receipt of the application form, fee, affidavit, proof of citizenship and application form for supervising physician, and the Board's receipt of required national data base reports, a temporary license may be granted by the Board staff pending review of the application by the Board if the applicant meets ALL of the following criteria:
The applicant has been continually licensed in good standing with an ACTIVE license for the preceding three (3) years in one or more states and/or the District of Columbia (training licenses are not considered active); and,
The applicant has none of the following:
Professional liability insurance settlements or payments in excess of $50,000 individually or $100,000 in the aggregate;
Criminal record;
Medical condition(s) which could affect the physician's ability to practice safely;
Licensing or regulatory board complaint(s), investigation(s), or action(s) (including withdrawal of a licensure application);
Adverse action taken by a health care entity;
Investigation(s) or action(s) taken by a federal agency, the United States military, medical society or association; or,
Suspension or expulsion from, or disciplinary action in, any academic program, including medical school, residency program or fellowship program.
No separate fee will be charged for a temporary license.
When will I receive a license?
We welcome your interest in medical licensure in the State of Wyoming!
A word of caution: The vast majority of applicants for medical licensure in Wyoming are qualified to receive an unrestricted license to practice medicine in this state with little or no difficulty. Please do not assume, however, that receiving a medical license is merely a formality, the granting of which is automatic. On rare occasion, an applicant may be found ineligible for licensure, or the Board of Medicine may deny a license or issues one with restrictions or conditions. Therefore, applicants are urged to refrain from relying upon an expectation of receiving a Wyoming medical license in making substantial life-changing commitments – changing employment, purchasing real estate in Wyoming, moving, enrolling children in Wyoming schools, etc. – prior to actual issuance of a license by the Board.
We make every effort to complete the process as quickly as possible, but occasionally we encounter unanticipated questions or difficulties that cause delays. Please call or email if you have any questions about the application process. We are more than happy to discuss with you or your designated person, your questions. An early inquiry may save you a good deal of concern, delay or inconvenience during the application process.
PLEASE NOTE:
1. To be considered for “permanent” licensure, application files must be received and complete in the Board office at least 15 business days prior to the next regularly-scheduled Board meeting (this includes all required supplemental documentation). All applications are reviewed for the “permanent” license at Board meetings only. All applicants for “permanent” licensure may be required to successfully complete and interview, in person, with the Wyoming Board of Medicine or the PA Advisory Council at one of its regularly-scheduled meetings. The Board normally meets in January, April, July and October of each year. If Wyoming will be your first “permanent,” non-training, non-temporary license in the United States, you will be required to interview with the PA Advisory Council.
2. All applications are reviewed for a temporary license prior to the application being reviewed for the "permanent" license at a Board meeting; this allows for practice to begin sooner. There is no separate application, fee or request for a temporary license. The Wyoming Board of Medicine follows the following process to review applications for a temporary license:
A. Expedited Temporary License. All applicants are reviewed to see if they meet the requirements to issue an expedited temporary license. The following information outlines the criteria an applicant must meet to be eligible for an expedited temporary license:
Upon receipt of the application form, fee, affidavit and proof of citizenship, and the Board's receipt of required national data base reports, a temporary license may be granted by the Board staff pending review of the application by the Board if the applicant meets ALL of the following criteria:

Suspension or expulsion from, or disciplinary action in, any academic program, including medical school, residency program or fellowship program.
B. If the applicant does not meet the requirements set forth for an expedited temporary license outlined above, the applicant must complete the application and all additional required documentation to be considered complete. At that time, the application will be reviewed for a temporary license.
{NOTE} We do not issue the Wyoming Controlled Substance Registration, please contact the Wyoming Board of Pharmacy to learn about that process.
